Is your dash lighting up with a range of pictures which aren’t as decipherable as you would like? This article is here to help.

When it comes to taking care of your vehicle and its engine, the lights on your dash are a great place to start. With the range of sensors in and around your car, your car is pretty good at telling you what’s wrong. As long as you are listening.

What Do Those Lights Mean?

To help you make sense of the icons lighting up while you drive, Progressive Products has the following article for you to read.

An Old School Thermometer Floating Above Water

If this symbol is lighting up on your dash then it’s a good chance that your engine is overheating, as this often describes your engine temperature light. There is a range of reasons why this light is shining at you while you drive, with the most likely being that you have run out of or are running dangerously low on coolant in your radiator. If you can see this light, the best thing to do is to pull over and let your engine cool down. If possible, safely lift up the hood to help release hot air which could be trapped inside, making the situation worse. Once the engine has cooled down, either top up your coolant or make your way straight home or to the car accessory store to refill.

Somebody Relaxing in a Chair Watching a Circle

If you can see a light which looks like this then it’s telling you that either your airbag is setting up or there is a problem with it. This light often comes on when you first switch on your car as the airbag and its relevant systems startup. However, if this light stays on while you are driving then it signifies that there is something wrong with your airbag and you should consider taking your vehicle to the mechanic or the dealer immediately. The reason why this is so important isn’t only that it could fail to deploy in the event of a collision, but that it has the potential to deploy while you are driving and without a trigger. Click here to buy Low Toxicity Antifreeze and Engine Coolant and keep your radiator and engine cool. Made with high-quality ingredients, Low Toxicity Antifreeze and Engine Coolant works to reduce your engine running temperature as you drive. An Exclamation Point Inside Two Half-Circles

If you have an anti-lock braking system then this light is trying to tell you that it isn’t working correctly. It could be that your brake pads are running low, that there is a communication error between your brake pedal and the system itself, or simply that your brake fluid is running low. The first thing to check is your brake fluid, and then your brake pads. If they are both fine, it’s best to head to a mechanic to have the system checked out. As you can imagine, braking is the most important safety feature in your vehicle, so be sure that it’s working correctly.

A Battery

You can probably guess what this light means. It means that there is a problem with your battery. The biggest problem that this can cause is that your vehicle won’t start the next time that you switch it off. If you can see this light, the first thing to check would be the condition of your battery and its terminals. If you can see that there is acid or corrosion on either, do your best to safely clean it and see if the light turns off. If not, and everything visually appears fine, it’s time to consider getting your battery replaced, lest you find yourself stuck in a car park waiting for roadside service to arrive.

Your Car with Some ‘S’ Coming from the Tires

Modern cars have a range of traction control options operating as you drive, and this is the light which relates to them. However, lighting up doesn’t always mean that something is wrong. If you can see this light, it may just mean that you have activated the car’s traction control system, either through the accidental press of a button or flick of a switch. If you are sure that this feature isn’t activated, then it could be telling you that something is wrong with one of the systems. Unfortunately, identification of what is wrong isn’t something a driver can do, with a visit to your mechanic or auto-electrician required.
