Whether you know everything your engine or very little, you know that driving your vehicle during extreme outside temperatures lead to nothing more than an overheated engine. And while it can be easy to think that if you don’t know much about how your engine works then you can’t possibly know enough to do anything about stopping your engine from overheating, the truth is that there are many steps every motorist can take to prevent their engine from overheating.

Easy to Follow Tips to Keep Your Temperature Gauge Down

To help you stay on the road for longer during the summer heat, below are some great tips from Progressive Products aimed to do just that!

Water Is Fine for a Radiator. Right?

If you can remember your parents filling their radiator with water then you are remembering a very old engine. With the performance improvements seen with modern engines, gone are the days when you could simply put water into your radiator and drive without trouble. Modern vehicles need a bit more help in this regard, help which comes in the form of engine coolant. Engine coolant is a purpose designed fluid which includes a range of additives that, when placed under extreme temperatures, actively work to reduce the operating temperature of your engine.

Watch the Temperature Gauge

Here is a scenario which you have either experienced or seen whilst driving. A group of friends pile into a car and make their way to the beach to take advantage of the sun while it’s out. However, along the way during traffic or just extreme heat, the driver notices the temperature gauge rising. As everybody in the car watches it rise, each passenger crosses their fingers, legs, bodies, everything they can to wish and hope that the gauge makes its move downwards. This hoping happens all the way until the engine finally gives out, the cap on the radiator pops open, and steam pours from under the hood of their car, leaving a car full of people stuck in the middle of the road waiting for help to arrive. Now, what if there was a way to prevent this from happening which didn’t involve wishing, hoping, or body contorting? Luckily, there is! And it’s as simple as pulling over safely to the side of the road and waiting 30 minutes for the engine to cool down and traffic to alleviate to allow smoother driving. That’s right. It’s as simple as that. By switching off your engine and waiting for the temperature to drop, you can actually get a lot more mileage out of your engine, often enough to get you to where you need to be or to get you and your friends home to take care of a greater engine problem. Monitor Your Air Conditioning Usage

The first thing that comes to mind when the temperatures rise is to turn on your air conditioner. And while this is a generally good idea, the challenge is stopping yourself cranking it all the way up until the inside of your car is like a scene from Disney’s Frozen. Instead of blasting the air conditioner, consider these ideas to reduce the temperature inside your vehicle. Use your air conditioning in small bursts and just enough to take the edge off the heat inside your vehicle. Your heater can actually be used as a vent for your engine. By turning on your non-powered heater, opening your front windows, and aiming your vents towards your open windows, excess heat can leave your engine and make its way outside your vehicle. If you are driving down the freeway, instead of using the air conditioning at all, open the front windows all the way and the rear windows a small amount. This can work to bring in cooler air from the outside which can push any stale or hot air outside of your car.

What’s Your Maintenance Schedule Like?

The harder your engine needs to work, the higher its operating temperature will be - regardless of the outside temperature. Then, when you add in the climate, a bad situation just becomes worse. Maintenance items like these can actually work to keep your engine temperature low:
  • Check and clean your air filter
  • Ensure your oil filter is not clogged
  • Keep your tire pressure at the correct level
  • Make sure your fluids are not only at the correct level but are fresh and haven’t passed their usefulness
  • A synthetic oil change can be a great benefit to make your engine performance smoother, leading to reduced engine temperatures.
